Scientific Evidence of Green tea and Oolong tea

Unless you have been living on Mars recently you would be aware of the huge amounts of evidence for the health benefits of green tea. What you may not be aware of is that there is a huge difference in the quality of green teas and the benefits they can produce.

All tea originates in China. The Chinese have long treasured green tea for its health benefits. In China there are literally thousands of different types of green tea and most of these different types have different grades of quality. In most cases a particular type of tea will have been growing in a single area for at least 5,000 years giving it unique properties and and a unique taste. In China some types of tea are virtually unattainable as they are reserved for the wealthy and well connected.

Unfortunately in the west most of us are introduced to green tea through a rather bitter tea bag of extremely low quality green tea. This can be very off putting but many of us perservere becasue of the health benefits we have read about. This is a complete misconception most types of high quality green tea are not in fact bitter but almost sweet with a very subtle flavour. Once introduced to high quality white, green or oolong tea it is very hard to go back!

Green tea and white tea are especially good for anti aging as they have been repeatedly scientifically shown to protect the skin and reverse the visible signs of aging. High quality green tea has also been shown to prevent hair loss. We have included the results of several of these studies below for your information.

All of White Lotus's teas are organically grown. Wherever possible we have obtained fully certified organic teas. However many of the highest qualities teas are not yet certified despite being organically grown. This is simply becase they are often small farmers who cannot afford the minimum $20,000 fee for certification. We hope by stocking both we can provide you with a wider choice.

Preperation of Green Tea

A small teaspoon of the tea should be placed in a tea pot.

  1. Water should be boiled and ideally allowed to cool to about 95 degrees celcius.
  2. The water should then be added to the pot swirled around and almost immiediately discarded. Traditionally the Chinese would say this step removed the dust. Interestingly as caffeine is highly water soluble it also removes a lot of the caffeine. (This step can be skipped if you really prefer caffeinated beverages).
  3. The pot should then be refilled and allowed to soak only for about 1 minute maximum, then poured out and drunk.
  4. This can be repeated up to 3 times with green tea and sometimes more with other types of tea.
  5. After this the tea should be discarded.

Different Types of Tea

All tea whether it is black, white, oolong or green comes from the same plant, the Camellia sinensis. Below is a brief description of each type of tea and the potential benefits.

White Tea

Both White tea and green tea are unfermented. The difference is that white tea is the very premium heads of the tea plant that are picked before they are fully opened when the buds are still covered with fine white hairs. Tastes vary between types but generally white tea should have a more subtle less bitter taste than most green teas.

Uses - White is very good at what the Chinese call clearing heat. Therefore we highly recommend it to anyone suffering from skin complaints that involve a lot of redness and itching.

Oolong tea has always traditionally been know for its slimming or weight loss properties in Chinese Medicine. This has been born out by modern research which has shown that it raises metabolism and reduces weight gain. Poor quality oolong tea taste almost smoky wheras high quality oolong tea taste very light and fragrant.
