Fragrances are not a new thing in the cosmetics world. In fact, perfumery is an ancient art that has been popular throughout the centuries. It’s only been recent that brands have moved away from natural fragrances, and started to use synthetic alternatives in their products.
But what are synthetic fragrances, and are they really that bad for you?
In this article, we’ll be exploring the history of clean beauty fragrances and explaining everything that you, as a customer, should know before buying cosmetics products that contain synthetic fragrances.
Synthetic fragrances or perfumes are created in a lab using things like petroleum and other gas byproducts. These are used in cosmetics to make the smell more pleasant but are very different from the natural fragrances that have been used for centuries.
People have been making perfumes for centuries in India, mainly consisting of oils that are applied directly to the skin. Once the perfume industry entered Europe, other ingredients started to get added to these natural oils – things like alcohol and other solvents.
As time went on, the balance between natural and synthetic changed drastically. The percentage of pure oils (known as attar oils) was mainly phased out in favour of inexpensive synthetic additives.
Now when you see fragrances in products, they’re almost always completely synthetic – meaning that there are no natural oils contributing to the scent of the product.
The answer is simple, brands use fragrance allergens in their cosmetics products because they are normally far cheaper than natural alternatives – which is better for business and their profits.
Many synthetic fragrances are packed full of alcohol which can actually make fragrant oils evaporate quickly. You’ll notice that the smell may be strong for the first hour or so, but it will quickly fade.
Natural attar oils are also pretty expensive, far more than synthetic fragrances, so many companies avoid using them as they want to make the largest profit margins possible – which means being cheap when it comes to ingredients.
When brands choose to use synthetic fragrance rather than natural in their products, there are a number of negatives. These include the product having a shorter shelf life, irritating sensitive skin, being extremely drying, and not lasting very long:
Alcohol evaporates far quicker than attar oils, so if you want the scent to last all day, you’ll have to keep reapplying your cosmetics product.
Synthetic fragrances only tend to have a shelf life of 6-18 months whereas pure attar oils can last years and years.
Any kind of solvent or alcohol that’s typically found in synthetic and chemical fragrances can cause real trouble for people with sensitive skin.
Alcohol is a drying agent, so using synthetic fragrances that contain a high concentration of alcohol can be damaging to the skin and cause premature wrinkles.
It’s surprisingly common for people to react badly to synthetic fragrances, this could be apparent in symptoms such as an itchy red rash, outbreak of hives, dry skin, or a burning sensation.
If you want to avoid any of the ill effects that come with using too many synthetic fragrances in your cosmetics product, the best thing to do is cut products with fragrances out of your routine.
When you’re shopping for your next beauty product, look out for products that have ‘fragrance-free’ on the label. Most products will be clearly labelled and state whether they contain synthetic fragrance, but often you might have to check the ingredients list yourself.
Unlike synthetic fragrances where reactions and irritation are common, it’s very rare to have any reaction to pure attar oils, they’re also more hydrating and of better quality.
You only need to use a very small amount of these oils in cosmetics products to create a subtle scent that will last all day. Not only do they smell better and last longer, but they also have hydrating properties that won’t cause premature aging.
Because they are all-natural, you don’t have to worry about what concoction of man-made ingredients you’re putting on your skin. You can have peace of mind that you’re only using the best quality fragrance.
To find the best alcohol and fragrance-free products, it’s best to always read the label and check the ingredients list before making a purchase.
Unfortunately, it’s still not as easy as you’d hope to buy fragrance-free moisturizers and other cosmetics products at your local store, but follow our tips and things will become much easier.
It should be fairly clear which products use synthetic fragrances and which ones don’t, but you should always read the label of every product to find out for sure.
Some brands will state it clearly on the front of the packaging, whereas on some products you may have to take a look at the ingredients list yourself.
Before making any purchases, you can do your research online to find out if a product is really fragrance-free or if it contains synthetic fragrances.
You can check the brand’s website, or look at forums online. There are plenty of other people who, like you, are looking for fragrance-free products who are always sharing their latest finds.

]]>If you dream of getting a perfect night’s sleep every night, your traditional cotton pillowcases and duvet sets aren’t going to cut it.
Investing in your sleep is one of the wisest things you can do with your money. Not only will the right sleep accessories allow you to drift off into a peaceful night’s sleep every night, but they will help you wake up feeling refreshed and energised throughout the day.
Many people agree that the secret to good beauty sleep lies in where you rest your head – your pillowcase.
Choosing the right pillowcase for you can come down to a range of decisions, but one of the most important is the material that your case is made out of.
And when it comes to pillowcase materials, silk is always coming out on top. Not only is it super comfortable and luxurious, but it also provides a range of beauty-related benefits.
There are a few varieties of silk, but our favourite at White Lotus is peace silk; it’s what we use in our pillowcases and eye masks, and we think you’re going to love it just as much as we do.
Peace silk is made in a similar way to other silk however, during the process of making peace silk, the moth is allowed to pierce the cocoon and leave (as opposed to traditional methods where the moth is boiled inside the cocoon).
Yes, ahimsa silk is known for being one of the most ethical silks. The name ahimsa translates to non-violent because this type of silk is a lot more ethical compared to other rearing methods.
This makes it a good choice for people who want to balance luxury with high animal welfare as, when it comes to rearing silkworms to produce silk, it can often be a process that doesn’t care too much for animal welfare.
Dermatologists and facialists alike all praise silk for its ability to save our skin, scalps and hair thanks to a whole host of impressive beauty benefits like hydrating the skin, strengthening your hair, nourishing your scalp, and reducing redness while you sleep.
You could be using various lotions, potions and creams to keep your youthful glow lasting as long as possible, but you could make things even easier when using the right bedding.
Here are just some of the reasons we think you should make the switch to a peace silk pillowcase:
The synthetic materials that are often used in pillowcases can trap heat while you’re sleeping, so if you want to keep calm and cool overnight it’s best to opt for a natural fibre that’s much more breathable.
When your skin is cooler, it reduces excessive sweating which can really help your skin, making it less prone to redness and inflammation.
Cooler temperatures can keep your skin looking bright, depuffed and glowing.
Silk has also started to be used to alleviate the symptoms of eczema and dermatitis. This is because the material is much smoother and doesn’t cause as much irritation, which is especially useful for those who suffer from sensitive skin.
Silk is less absorbent than synthetic materials and causes less friction so you can be sure that your expensive products will work to their full potential while you’re sleeping.
When you’ve spent time diligently applying your skincare products, the last thing you want to do is to rub everything off the second your head hits the pillow.
Think of all the money you’ve invested into your serums, moisturisers and oils. It’s a total waste of money if they don’t even stay on your skin to work their magic overnight.
With a peace silk pillowcase, there’s a much better chance of your skincare products staying where they belong: on your face.
Silk is actually an anti-static material, meaning that it won’t mess up your hair – even if you spend the whole night tossing and turning.
Do you ever wake up and realise that your hair has gone crazy and frizzy overnight?
This is because your pillow can often be rough on your hair, which can cause damage overnight.
The smooth and glossy texture of our peace silk pillowcases is gentle and protective. It’s even been found that the proteins found in silk adhere to the keratin in our hair which protects each individual strand to keep things strong and healthy.
Silk pillowcases help to reduce skin creasing, which can often lead to premature wrinkles. It’s a far more gentle fabric so even if you have sensitive skin, you don’t have to worry about picking up on those pesky fine lines next time you look in the mirror.
Everyone dreams of retaining a youthful glow for as long as possible and an ethical silk pillowcase could be the secret to doing this.
Sleeping on a natural silk pillowcase has been shown in studies to limit the amount of friction caused to your skin during sleep.
The Ahimsa silk pillowcase also forms a delicate moisture barrier against the skin which makes sure any vital moisture does not absorb into the pillow overnight.
White Lotus peace silk pillowcases are high quality, effective and long-lasting. We work to create the best products for our customers so they can enjoy all the beauty benefits that come with using luxurious ahimsa silk, which sets us apart from many of our competitors.

Scientific trials have shown microneedling can achieve a 1-2 grade improvement in scars. Another trial showed that participants rated the results as an 80% improvement in the appearance of the scarring (1,2).
This article will discuss the treatment and effectiveness of micro-needling on a variety of scar types.
[blogquiz]
Microneedling is commonly applied to surgical scars including cesarean scars or C section scars. These scars are usually raised and red at first but fade over time. Microneedling can reduce the raised scarring and help the body create new smoother skin in the area.
Using a derma roller for surgical scars has become a common practice. Depending on the size of the scars this can be done at home or in a clinic. In most cases, a 1.0mm dermaroller will achieve good results and this is the maximum length that should be used at home.
When working on surgical scars a good quality oil like green tea oil should be used to increase the effectiveness of the treatment.
When scars are first formed they are usually red in colour and fade to white over time. Microneedling can be applied to scars almost as soon as the injury has healed. Treating scars early usually produces better results so the sooner the treatments are started the better.
White scars are usually older scars that have faded over time. Older scars are sometimes harder to treat but you can still achieve excellent results with microneedling. Scars should be treated every 2 weeks for a period of 12 weeks with a 1.0mm derma roller in most cases.
Old scars can be more stubborn when treated. Most smaller scars can be treated at home with a 1.0mm derma roller. This should be applied every 2 weeks in packages of 6. A month or two of recovery time should be allowed before commencing another package of treatments if required.
Ice pick scars are a type of acne scar. Ice pick scars microneedling works well as these scars often cover a wide area of skin. Dermarollers can cover the entire affected area more quickly and effectively than techniques that target each scar individually.
Ice pick scars are deeper and harder to treat than other acne scars such as boxcar scars. Normally a 1.0mm microneedle roller should be used every 2 weeks for a course of treatment.
It is important to note that you cannot microneedle across skin that is still suffering from acne. This would create further scarring. In many cases treatment of the continuing acne must take place first before you can start derma rolling.
As most people contract chickenpox when they are young the scars will usually be old by the time they are treated. Like ice pick scars chicken pox scars microneedling is usually very effective. It should be carried out every 2 weeks for 6 treatments with a 1.0 mm derma roller.
Microneedling for chickenpox scars can be performed on children with their consent. In these cases, it is sometimes better to use a 0.5mm microneedling device to reduce any discomfort. Early treatment of scars is always preferable and can improve the results of the treatment.
Scars on the edge of the lips can be treated effectively with microneedling however it is better not to roll extensively across the lips themselves. This can damage the sensitive tissue and cause excessive swelling in the area.
Some clinics will actually deliberately use a dermaroller on the edge of the lips to create minor swelling. The swelling caused creates the impression of fuller lips similar to collagen injections in the area. Results however only last a few days.
When microneedling scars around the lips it is best to use a 1.0mm needle length. However, if this is a particularly sensitive area then it may be better to employ a 0.5 mm roller.
Scars from injuries of other causes on the legs can be effectively treated with microneedling. In most cases, a 1.0mm derma roller should be used, and rolling should be in an upwards direction to work with venous drainage.
Scars on the upper legs should be treated in much the same way as stretch marks to reduce the damaged tissue and increase new collagen production.
Scars on the breasts including scars from injury and from breast enhancement procedures can be treated with microneedling. It is important to note that microneedling should not be performed across the nipple. Women with breast implants should also consult their Doctor before proceeding and should never use microneedles over 1.0mm.
Breast stretch marks can also be treated with micro-needling in much the same way. Use a 1.0 mm derma roller once every 2 weeks for a series of 6 treatments. Allow the skin to rest for several months and then repeat the package if necessary.
Both hypertrophic (raised) scars and hypotrophic (sunken) scars respond well to microneedling. In both cases, the small punctures stimulate the body to break down the misaligned collagen fibres and create a completely new layer of smooth skin.
Research on microneedling for burn scars has shown that a series of 3 treatments can produce an 80% improvement in the appearance of burn scars. If the burns are extensive then this is a medical condition and the microneedling should be performed in an appropriate clinic.
Small burns can be treated very effectively at home or in a local clinic. Please see the Before and After page for images of an Australian woman who treated her burn scars from a grass fire with the White Lotus derma roller.
You should never use a derma roller for keloid scars. Keloid scars continue to grow long after the initial injury. Microneedling can potentially stimulate this growth and make the scar worse. Please consult your doctor if you are not sure if a scar is a keloid scar or not.

Below we run through the main derma roller uses one by one with recommended needle lengths for each one. There is also a quick reference table to help you quickly select the correct micro needle length for you.
The recommendations work equally well for stainless steel microneedles as well as the new biocompatible polymer microneedle rollers.
First we need to quickly establish exactly what reactions each micro-needle length creates in the skin.
A 0.25 mm dermaroller is too small to pass through the epidermis into the dermis. It is therefore unable to initiate new collagen induction. By penetrating the epidermis it does increase transdermal absorption through the skin. This can be beneficial for skin care when used with safe natural cosmetic products.
[blogquiz]
This is the most commonly used dermaroller length. It is the shortest microneedle that will effectively increase collagen production. This allows it to deliver fresher and smoother skin with the least amount of tissue damage. It is very popular for beauty treatments both at home in clinic.
This is a good all round length when the microneedles need to pass through scar tissue or hair to reach the scalp. Slightly longer than the 0.5mm so it can pass through thin scar tissue like acne scars and still create collagen induction below the scars.
Longer microneedles are sometimes used in clinic in particular to treat medical conditions such as burn scars. Microneedles us to 3.0mm long can be used in these situations. This is a very invasive medical procedure and these needle lengths should not be used at home.
For regenerating the skin on the face a derma roller 0.5 mm in length is the most useful. This is perfect for general beauty treatments as it inducts collagen and increases transdermal absorption. If you wish to treat scarring then longer microneedles will be needed.
So in answering the question what size microneedles for the face it depends on the condition on the face and we discuss further options below including the 1mm derma roller for the face.

The 0.5mm roller will work best as it will induct new collagen in the area. However in some cases you may only want to increase the absorption of an eye cream. In these cases a 0.25mm roller is sufficient and will be less sensitive in this delicate area.
In the sensitive eye area it can be an advantage to use the hypoallergenic dermarollers to reduce reactions.
In most cases the 1.0mm roller is the best microneedling size for acne scars. It is long enough to penetrate through the relatively thin acne scar tissue and stimulate the healthy tissue underneath. This will initiate the wound healing cascade to break down the old collagen and replace it with fresh healthy skin.
Ice pick scars and other acne scars do not tend to be very thick and this can be performed at home or in clinic. In rare cases where large cysts have formed very thick scar tissue then a 1.5mm Derma roller needle length for acne scars may be required. If this is the case the treatment should be performed in a clinical situation.

There is plenty of evidence to show that used correctly micro-needling can stimulate hair growth on the scalp. It's affects as a beard growth kit have never been studied. Anecdotally patients report thickening of hair in the beard area using a 0.5mm roller or a 1.0mm roller if the beard is already well established.
Derma rollers for beard growth are therefore unproven but most likely will increase facial hair growth in the same way they increse scalp hair growth.
You may also want to roll across the area to improve the quality of the skin below the beard and the beard may simply be in the way. In these cases it is often better to use a 1.0 mm roller. Beards are quite springy and can act as a barrier to the needles properly penetrating the skin.
The extra length of a 1.0 mm microneedle ensures that they skin is treated successfully below the beard. If using beard oil make sure that the beard oil is as natural as possible as the microneedling will increase the absorption of this oil into the skin.
The 0.5 mm dermaroller is the best size to assist hyperpigmentation and melasma. Hyperpigmentation can be difficult to treat with microneedling. A test patch should always be done first to see how the skin reacts before proceeding with treatment.
As hyperpigmentation is a tricky subject we have done another blog and video which describes the treatment and potential results in detail. We do recommend the hypoallergenic bio-polymer derma rollers in these cases as they are less reactive than stainless steel.
A 1.0mm derma roller is the best length to assist hair loss. The extra length ensures the microneedles can pass through the remaining hair to reach the scalp below. In cases where there is virtually no hair in the area a 0.5mm roller can be used but these cases rarely achieve good results.
Unlike face treatments the mechanism by which dermarollers assist hair loss is not collagen induction. It appears to directly stimulate the hair follicles and also increase the absorption of products that can benefit the scalp.
If all the hair follicles in the area area completely dead then it is less likely that you will achieve great results. For this reason the derma roller 1mm for hair loss which allows you to pass through existing hair remains the best size dermaroller for hair loss.
The extra length allows it to pass through any remaining hair in the area and is therefore the best derma roller needle size for hair.
It is also worth noting that dermastamps of 1.0mm in length are often better used on the scalp. They have the advantage that hair does not get tangled in the axel of the roller and torn out. This is very counter productive when treating hair loss.

When assisting hair loss on the scalp a dermaroller 1 mm in length is the best size derma roller. The extra derma roller length allow the microneedles to pass through any remaining hair to successfully penetrate the scalp.
The neck contains a variety of delicate structures. It is best to use shorter 0.5mm needles in this area and only light pressure in an upward direction. For men where a beard is present and cushioning the skin a 1.0mm roller may be required to pass through the hair.
For caesarean scars, ice picks scars, light burn scars and most surgical scars a 1.0mm roller is sufficient to achieve results. If you are dealing with thicker scars like severe burn scars then a longer microneedle may be required and this must be done in a medical environment.
Microneedling can benefit both raised (hypertrophic scars) and sunken (hypotrophic scars). It should however never be used on keloid scars which continue to grow as microneedling may stimulate this growth.
The dermaroller 1.00 mm is the best dermaroller length for assisting striae. This is long enough to pass through the raised scar tissue in the area , increasing blood circulation and stimulating collagen production for new smooth skin in the area.

The 1.0 mm microneedling roller is the best option for assisting cellulite on the thighs buttocks and abdomen. It can stimulate new collagen production to strengthen the skins matrix to better contain the fat cells in the area.

]]>Microneedling effectively reduces the appearance of acne scars. By creating micro trauma in the area it inducts the body’s own natural wound healing cycle. This produces collegenease an enzyme that breaks down the old damaged collagen and allows a new smooth layer of collagen to develop in its place.
Acne Scarring can take several forms. Many people suffer from multiple small ice pick scars while others may develop larger more isolated scars. Hypotrophic scars or sunken scars are more common but scars can also be raised (hypertrophic scars) in some cases.
[blogquiz]
Micro needling also called dermarolling or skin needling employs tiny micro needles which pass over the skin causing tiny punctures. These holes activate the body's own natural wound healing process.
As part of this process a group of enzymes are deployed to break up any old damaged collagen. They naturally identify the scar tissue, which is simply misaligned collagen fibres, and start breaking it down. As they do this they create a new smooth layer of skin to replace it.
It is important to note that micro-needling can benefit both raised and depressed scars. It can also cover a large area of skin very quickly which is very effective against the pock marked depressions common in acne scarring.
Several studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of derma rollers on scars. One study showed that of 37 people treated, 34 showed a 1-2 grade improvement in the appearance of their scars (1). A second study showed an 80% improvement in the scars appearance after 3 treatment sessions (2).
This research had been backed up by literally thousands of testimonials from people around the world who have benefited from micro needling for acne scars results.
Research has shown that collagen induction can only take place up to 0.6mm into the skin (3). When dealing with scarring the micro needles need to be slightly longer to account for the thickness of the scars. A 1.0mm derma roller is usually the best length to pass through the acne scars and initiate the new health collagen production below it.
The best derma roller needle length for acne scars is the 1.0mm. This is because acne scars are usually not very thick and are often depressed. Longer micro needles of 1.5 or 2.0mm can be used on thicker scars such as burn scars, but should only be used in a clinical environment.
There has been a lot of debate on the best microneedling size for acne scars over the years. As shown above collagen induction only takes place up to 0.6mm into the skin. However practitioners have argued about how much longer the needles need to be to pass through the scar tissue.
Feedback from both clinics and home users show the 1 mm is the best derma roller needle size for acne scars. They cover the surface area well and effectively reduce the appearance of acne scars.
In initial trials of microneedling 3.0mm rollers were actually used. These were effective but caused massive tissue damage. They could only be used in hospital settings due to the amount of blood and trauma involved.
Thankfully we now know much tiny needle sizes are effective and more people can benefit from these treatments both at home and in clinic.
6 is the ideal number of sessions of microneedling to assist acne scars. Treatments should be spaced at least 2 weeks apart to allow the skin to heal between treatments. This is based on using a 1.0mm dermaroller. If using longer micro needles more time must be allowed between treatments.
The answer then to how many microneedling sessions for acne scars is dependent on needle length. As 1.0mm is the preferred micro needle length it is best to stick to 6 treatments over 12 weeks.
Under no circumstances follow advice from Ebay or other 'reputable' micro needling sources and use a derma roller every day as part of your skincare routine!
Yes once the old misaligned collagen fibres (scar tissue) have been broken down by the wound healing cascade they do not return. A new smooth layer of collagen is created by the body in its place. This dramatically reduces the appearance of acne scars.
Microneedling is a very natural therapy as it simply initiates the body's own natural healing mechanisms. Once they have been initiated and transformed the scar, then it will not return.
This is best performed with a 1.0 mm derma roller. This length is effective at reducing the scar tissue without the risks of longer micro needles. Micro needling at home should be performed once every 2 weeks for 12 weeks. A further group of sessions can then be performed if required.
Microneedling for acne scars at home can be performed by most people. If however you are at all nervous about home derma rollers or prefer assistance then it may be better to consult a trained practitioner to assist you with your treatment.
Acne scars on the back can be treated exactly the same as facial acne scars. Use a 1.0mm dermaroller and roll across the entire area crossing each point at least 15 times. Session should be spaced 2 weeks apart for 12 weeks.
A second round of treatment can then be introduced a month or so later if required.
A variety of different types of derma rollers now exist on the market. Some use titanium needles whole the most common is stainless steel microneedles. A more recent addition is the development of micro needles made from bio compatible polymers. These hypoallergenic derma rollers are ideal for assisting acne prone sensitive skin.
Hypoallergenic derma rollers have several advantages over metal microneedle rollers. The lack of metal means the skin is far less likely to react. They are also the only option for people suffering the increasingly common nickel allergies. Finally the polymer is formed in one mould so needles can never fall out unlike most stainless steel roller heads.

Both are highly effective for different purposes. Below we will discuss which work better for different skin types, skin conditions and personalities. If you need any help why not take a quick quiz to see which crystal best suits your skin type, chakras or acupuncture meridian.
Jade is better on oily or acne prone skin. It has a naturally stronger anti inflammatory and clearing effect. It is associated with detoxifying and clearing blemishes. In many cases this also makes it more suitable for younger skin.
Rose quartz rollers on the other hand can also be used for oily or acne prone skin but are more often recommended for combination, normal and sensitive skin. They have a more balancing affect than jade rollers. They are not as nourishing as amethyst rollers but are a good intermediary between more clearing crystals like jade and nourishing crystals such as amethyst.
This balancing affect makes them suitable for a very wide range of skin types.
Rose Quartz rollers are carved from a stone of love and therefore naturally work on the heart chakra. Jade rollers interestingly also focus on the heart chakra. The energetic principle however is slightly more clearing while the rose roller is more nourishing.
Both crystals provoke positive energy and are believed to deliver deep healing energy.
Rose Quartz rollers are more closely associated with the heart and triple burner in Chinese Medicine. Jade Rollers are more closely associated with the liver and gall bladder.
Rose quartz is a nourishing stone of the heart in western energetic understanding and this principles holds in Chinese medicine also. In traditional Chinese medicine red is also the colour of the heart and organ element of the heart is fire.
Despite being associated with the heart in western spiritualism, jade is more closely associated with the liver and Gall Bladder in Chinese medicine theory. Green is the colour of the liver and Gall Bladder in TCM and the clearing and detoxifying affects of jade are more suitable to the patterns of damp heat associated with the liver in Chinese Medicine.
Rose Quartz is a much harder stone than nephrite jade. The hardness is relevant because harder crystals are more difficult to carve. For this reason many unscrupulous manufacturers chemically treat the rose quartz crystal to make it easier to carve. This saves them money on breakages.
Both crystals are non porous which is important for hygiene. Rose quartz is composed of silicon and oxygen like all quartz. It obtains its pink colour from traces of iron, manganese and titanium. The Mohs hardness scale is used to rate the hardness of crystals. The higher the score the harder the crystal. Rose quartz has a hardness rating of 7 making it reasonably strong.
Nephrite jade on the other hand contains a variety of chemical components including calcium, magnesium, iron, silicon and oxygen. It has a hardness rating of 6-6.5 Mohs. This makes it much softer than rose quartz.
Interestingly many people think this makes rose quartz rollers more durable. Sadly not as they tend to shatter more wildly when dropped due to the different crystal structure.
Both rollers will benefit fine lines and wrinkles, improve lymphatic drainage, reduce swelling and improve skin tone and texture. Energetically jade is considered a more clearing and detoxifying crystal for younger skin. Rose quartz is better for combination and sensitive skin that may require more nourishing.
A jade roller may be better if you are prone to oily skin or outbreaks of acne. A rose quartz roller may suit you more if you have combination or sensitive skin and wish to focus more on fine lines and wrinkles.
Ultimately it is not rose quartz roller vs jade roller but rather which roller is best for you. Crystals are as different and unique as you are. It is important to know which crystals will best suit your skin type but it is also important to use a crystal you are drawn to.
A good crystal roller will last you a lifetime so make sure you are truly happy with not only the crystal type but the quality and authenticity of the product. Also make sure that any crystal roller you buy is not chemically treated.
This is done by cheap manufacturers to make carving easier and improve the colours on low grade crystal. Unfortunately it changes the chemical composition of the crystal and so alters its energetic effect. This defeats the purpose of choosing the correct crystal type for your skin.
Overall both are very effective beauty tools that can provide a deep healing facial massage. Both face rollers will stay naturally cool while in contact with the skin and can help relax the nervous system while providing a powerful beauty treatment.

]]>Any form of beauty tool, facial massage or stimulation can potentially have this affect. This includes acupuncture, acupressure, Tui Na, lymphatic drainage, facial rollers and gua sha tools amongst others.
In the White Lotus clinic we usually recommend that clients avoid any form of massage in the local area in which they are receiving botox. This is purely a precaution. There is no immediate harm from jade rolling after botox or other injectables. The only small risk is that any form of natural massage that increases the detoxification process could reduce the amount of time that the botox lasts.
It is important to note that botulinum toxin is one of the most poisonous substances known to man. Although it is recognised as safe for facial injections your body still recognises it as a poison and actively works to remove it.
Any natural health enhancing massage is likely to assist your body in this endeavour.
So can you use a jade roller after botox? Yes it is safe to do so. The only risk is that the effects of the botox may wear off slightly sooner and you may need to return for repeat injections more often.
Jade rollers can be rolled across the lips and other sensitive areas of the face including the neck. They can provide a gentle effective massage to these areas. Caution should be exercised if cold sores are present so as not to spread the infection.
Jade rollers are a very gentle form of cosmetic massage. This makes them an ideal facial tool for sensitive areas which are more difficult to massage with other tools such as gua sha combs and dermarollers.
Jade rollers can be used on the neck when applied with gentle pressure. When rolling on the neck always roll upwards to lift the skin of the neck. This is also safer as you are working with the natural blood flow in the carotid arteries.
The neck is one of the most difficult areas to treat cosmetically. Many massage and other cosmetic techniques cannot be applied here due to the delicate nature of the wind pipe and the location of the arteries. Most skincare products are also ineffective in reducing the sagging skin.
For this reason many people concerned about turkey neck opt for cosmetic surgery which although incredibly invasive is effective in these condition.
The jade roller provides are least one natural alternative. The results may not be quite as dramatic but then neither is the procedure!
Jade rollers can be used very effectively on the delicate skin above and below the eyes and can also be rolled across the eyelids with the eyes closed. This can assist sagging in the eye lids and is particularly effective against eye bags and puffiness.
Crystal rollers work so well at reducing puffiness under the eyes because they directly stimulation the lymphatic system. This helps remove excess fluid in the area. Very few tools are gentle enough to provide a massage in this area.
When using the roller in this area it is often easier to buy a jade roller with a smaller head specifically for these delicate and hard to reach areas. You can also keep the roller in the fridge. This makes it even feel even cooler and feels wonderful on inflamed, or sore eyes.
Please note: It is very important not to use poor quality rollers that employ wire brackets to hold the roller in place. These rollers often break exposing sharp wire ends underneath. These can rip and damage skin but worse but cause very serious issues if they come in direct contact with the eyes.
Not sure if this will work at de puffing your eyes then please see the media page where celebrity pop star Tallia Storm raves about how her White Lotus roller does exactly that.
Jade rollers should not be rolled directly across active acne. This could result in spreading the bacteria and make the acne worst. Jade rollers can be used on unaffected skin and in between outbreaks. This can increase skin nutrition and may have an indirect benefit to acne prone skin.
Face rollers such as the jade roller have advantages over Gua Sha. They are gentler and can be used on more sensitive areas such as the neck, lips and eyes. They are also easier for most people to learn and can be effectively used straight away without any training.
Gua Sha can provide more intensive stimulation. They are a little more difficult to learn but once mastered have more utility than face rollers. They can, for example be used to directly stimulate individual acupuncture points. This is impossible with a face roller.
Yes jade rollers can be used without any oil. The roller will roll across the skin just as effectively. Not using oil allows you to keep the roller cleaner. Many people choose to use the roller with an oil or so as to gently roll the products into the skin.
A number of oils can be used with the jade roller including rosehip oil, jojoba oil and argan oil. Traditionally jade rollers were used with Green tea oil (Camellia sinensis oil). This is perhaps still the most effective as it nourishes the skin but does not clog the pores.

]]>As you can see the question of how to wash a jade roller is irrelevant. Most jade rollers simply disintegrate with regular washing. For many years we have used jade rollers extensively in clinic. Use in a clinical situation is far more intensive than home use so a wonderful test of the durability of a jade roller.
In clinic the 30 or so rollers may be washed up to 9 times a day. If the whole roller is washed in water each time then the average roller will last about 30 days. After this corrosion ruins the appearance and weakens the metal making it unusable.
This is worse with rollers that employ wire brackets that are simply glued in place. The glue dissolves far faster meaning the metal falls apart. This potentially exposes the sharp wire to patients skin. This is of course unacceptable.
A clinical situation is of course different to home use. In clinic rollers are used on different clients so correctly disinfecting the rollers it vital.
Cleaning a jade roller after use at home involves ensuring that both physical particles like oil and dirt are removed and that all bacteria is destroyed. To remove oil and dirt, detergent or alcohol must be used and the roller physically scrubbed. Alcohol or colloidal silver is required to kill the bacteria.
When jade rolling at home it is assumed that you are not sharing the roller with anyone as part of your skin care routine. If you are please see the section below on disinfecting the jade roller instead. It is assumed you are using the roller daily. It is also assumed that you have bought a roller in which the head can be removed occasionally for more thorough cleaning.
To disinfect a jade roller spray the roller with either isopropyl alcohol or colloidal silver to kill 99.99% of all bacteria. Please note this is not the same as sterilising a roller which kills blood born viruses and is not suitable for jade rollers.
Sterilising a facial roller is only relevant in clinical situations. In these cases facial massages may be used on multiple customers after penetrative procedures which involve blood. These include microdermabrasion and injections. In these situations it is better not to use and share a jade roller between customers.
Sterilising a jade roller is not relevant for home users who do not share their roller with others. Disinfecting a roller is ample protection against infection.
To store the jade roller it is best placed back into the box in which it arrives. The best quality boxes are silk lined as this was the traditional way in China. The silk protects the jade and recreates the luxury of when jade was considered more valuable than gold.
Looked after properly a jade roller can last a lifetime. Real jade will not fade with time. In poor quality rollers the metal brackets may fall apart. It is important to buy better quality rollers preferably with a lifetime guarantee if you plan to use your roller long term.
White Lotus was founded by two Australian acupuncturists who first discovered their use almost 20 years ago while studying Chinese Medicine in China.
The crystal rollers can dramatically increase lymphatic drainage, and facial blood circulation to improve the appearance. Combined with facial oils they are a must in any beauty routine.
The White Lotus jade rollers are designed to be of clinical strength. Meaning they will stand up to constant use day in day out.
To do this they employ stronger thick metal brackets. This allows White Lotus to offer its unique lifetime guarantee on all its crystal rollers.
White Lotus Jade rollers are made using only hand carved nephrite jade. The White Lotus jade is mined ethically and is never chemically treated unlike most of its competitors.

]]>Silk pillowcases are also anti bacterial and anti fungal. They naturally repel dust mites mold and mildew. This makes them ideal for allergy sufferers and is one of the often overlooked benefits of sleeping with a silk pillowcase.
The earliest silk products date back to 3630 BC. It was the Chinese who first realised the amazing cosmetic properties of silk. The ancient wealthy households of China would value their silk bedding. It was already well known in these circles that silk was an anti aging secret that benefited both skin and hair.
So sure were the ancient emperors of China of the benefits of silk that they banned the export of silk production techniques. It remained an exclusive Chinese secret for thousands of years.
It did eventually escape the country and has been a symbol of luxury and indulgence ever since. Marilyn Monroe once claimed to only sleep naked in silk sheets further enhancing the association with sensuality.
This association is well deserved but to some extent ignores the practical silk pillowcase benefits for skin and hair.
According to research yes they do. A Scandinavian study showed that cotton pillowcases do leech the moisture out of the skin overnight, increasing wrinkle formation. The proteins in silk on the other hand form a protective barrier preventing this epidermal water loss.
A practical example of this are patients who for medical reasons such as pain can only sleep on one side of their body. After many years they will generally form far worse wrinkles on this side of their face. In these cases the cotton pillowcase absorbs moisture from the skin.
Silk is 97% protein, principally 2 proteins sericin and fibroin. Silk proteins have been shown to increase hydration of the epidermal cells and reduce moisture loss (2). Silk proteins are high in anti oxidants which provide a range of skin benefits including inhibiting lipid peroxidation in the skin (3).
Anyone suffering from skin conditions will also be interested to note that bandages of silk are now often employed in hospitals. On average healing under a silk bandage occurs 7 days faster than with a traditional bandage (4).
Silk is naturally smooth and reduces friction. This makes it less likely to tear out hair while you sleep, benefiting those suffering hair loss. The lack of friction in silk pillowcases also reduces frizzy hair or bed head. Silk lined hats are sometimes also worn during the day for this reason.
Modern research has suggested that it may not only be the smooth nature of silk that benefits hair. This research has shown that proteins in silk adhere to the keratin in both our skin and hair (5). This adherence forms a visible protective film on the hair which helps keep hair strong and straight.
Silk pillowcases naturally feel cooler when in contact with the skin. This has lead to silk becoming popular with many women suffering hot flushes and changes in complexion brought on by menopause. Evidence of the benefits is only anecdotal but suggest that silk bedding may provide relief in these conditions.
Some sufferers of hot flushes also report that it reduces the sweating associated with hot flushes. Its ability to regulate sweat is the reason it is commonly used in hiking and high end exercise clothing.
So do silk pillowcases stay cool? No research has ever been done directly on this but users perception very clearly shows that users perceive a real benefit from the cooling pillowcases.
No generally people report silk pillowcases feel cool to sleep on rather than warm. Those living in cold environments who want warmth at night may be better with cotton blends. Silk is a cool and natural fabric which may benefit those suffering hot flushes or who experience sweating at night.
Yes silk is naturally anti bacterial, anti fungal and repels dust mites mould and mildew. For this reason it is sometimes recommended children and adults who suffer from allergies sleep on silk bedding. Silk sheets may not be an option due to the price but a silk pillowcase can make a difference.
More detailed research is also continuing on the benefits of silk for eczema and dermatitis. Sufferers of atopic dermatitis have long been warned to avoid rough fibres like wool which irritate the skin.
Traditionally cotton was the preferred choice but it too is largely composed of large rough fibres. Modern research is suggesting that silk may be a better fabric for both conditions (6).
We are sometimes asked can you be allergic to silk pillowcases? At this point there has never been a recorded reaction to silk unlike cotton or other fabrics.
Silk is a natural environmentally sustainable fabric unlike satin. While both fabrics are perceived as smooth. Silk pillowcases are naturally breathable and form a moisture barrier against the skin. This stops moisture leeching out of the skin and prevents wrinkles unlike a satin pillowcase.
Research has shown that cotton pillowcases leech moisture out of the skin leading directly to wrinkles. The natural silk proteins on the other hand form a natural moisture barrier preventing epidermal water loss and keeping skin hydrated.
Mulberry silk is considered the highest quality of silk available. It is finer and less course than other forms of silk. Silk pillowcase benefits such as not tearing out hair or irritating skin conditions are dependent on the smoothness of the fabric. Therefore mulberry silk pillowcases are usually preferable.
When choosing a silk pillowcase you should pay attention to the thread count, style and reputation of maker. The momme count determines the thickness of the silk and usually how long it will last. Oxford style is the more luxurious appearance and involves more silk. The manufacturer is important as it is hard for most people to determine the quality of silk they receive.
19 momme silk is considered the best quality for silk pillowcases. Many manufacturers claim higher weave count but this is rarely the case. For this reason it is very important to trust the seller. If not you may find your pillowcase dissolves in the washing machine after several weeks.
If it is important to you look for extras like a gift box if planning to give the silk fabrics as a present .
This article has shown that silk pillowcases can be effective in assisting, wrinkles, thinning hair, hot flushes and other skin conditions. For a simple piece of bedding the reach and impact a silk pillowcase can have is huge. It can simply and affordably make a large difference in many peoples lives.

Yes as microneedling creates a lot of inflammation a soothing oil can be ideal. The type of oil used is very important. Many oils are too cloying and block the pores, risking rashes and infections. Light oils like camellia sinensis oil are the best facial oils immediately after derma rolling.
Oils unlike water based moisturisers cross the lipid barrier in the skin and so can deeply penetrate and nourish the skin cells. Oils have traditionally been under utilised in skincare products as they were seen as greasy and likely to cause blocked pores and acne.
This has changed in recent years as a wider variety of oils have become available on the market. The way the oils are being combined has also changed. Good quality organic carrier oils are being used to transport and increase the skin penetration of thicker more nourishing oils.
These changes have lead to a rise in the number of face oils available on the market. Oils are now also used to combat stretch marks and scars. Celebrity fans of face oils include global names like Kate Middleton and Miranda Kerr. This has vastly expanded the appeal of oils for skin care.
If the use of cosmetic oils is now well established then how do you select an oil to combine with microneedling?
Microneedling creates tiny punctures in the skin. A derma roller rolled across the skin 15 times will produce approximately 250 punctures per square cm. This allows microneedling to create a completely new layer of natural collagen and elastin.
Microneedling or collagen induction therapy has three main side effects.
Any oil used must address these side effects.
The oil used must also not be too thick and cloying. Thick cloying oils naturally increase blocked pores and active acne outbreaks. Used after microneedling they can increase the likelihood of red papule like rashes breaking out on the skin. This is particularly important in areas where sweat can accumulate like the creases around the neck.
As well as fine lines and wrinkles microneedling is often used to address acne scars. In many people with acne scars, active acne can still be found in the area so oils that block the pores are particularly problematic.
Additionally microneedling increases the absorption of any products placed on the skin before and for at least 8 hours after the treatment. For this reason you must be very careful not to place anything toxic on the skin during this period.
This can even include some products that are safe to be used as part of a normal skincare routine. After microneedling the tiny punctures in the skin allow products to pass directly into the blood stream. This is why microneedling is often employed as an alternative to syringes for vaccinations.
Identifying which oils are safest can be difficult. Below we will go through a variety of oils and their benefits and side effects when derma rolling. If in doubt the golden rule is to use a light oil that won’t block the pores and is known to be non toxic.
Rosehip oil is a good option after microneedling but not the best option available. Rosehip is fairly safe and non toxic even when taken orally. Despite its high vitamin C content though some people find it slightly cloying so it can potentially cause acne and blocked pores in younger skin.
Coconut oil is too greasy to use after dermarolling. It is a very thick and well known to clog the pores. This makes it more likely it will cause rashes post treatment. It can be an effective cosmetic oil but it is better not to use it straight after microneedling.
When used an an anti aging oil it is best used on older skin or skin that is experiences dryness. Coconut oil actually contains high levels of linoleic acid which should benefit acne but due to its other cloying properties it is best avoided by anyone with acne prone skin.
[blogquiz]
Olive oil is generally considered to thick and cloying to act as a cosmetic oil alone. It is sometimes used as a carrier oil for other less greasy oils. It is best avoided after microneedling as it can increase the risk of acne outbreaks after dermaroller treatments.
Argan is a wonderful rejuvenating oil but is best avoided after microneedling treatments. It is a very thick oil which is best used on more mature skin. Its cloying nature can lead to blocked pores and rashes post microneedling.
It is better to avoid jojoba oil after microneedling. The oil contains a chemical called erucic acid. It is considered potentially toxic when taken orally. As microneedling increases the absorption into the blood stream of any products placed onto the skin after treatment it is best avoided.
The use of aloe vera after dermaroller treatments is debatable. Aloe vera gel dramatically reduces inflammation. This is good for reducing redness but a certain amount of inflammation is necessary for collagen creation following microneedling. To be safe it is best avoided for the first week after a treatment.
Hyaluronic acid is best avoided immediately after microneedling. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the skin but is synthetically produced for the cosmetic industry. It is better reserved as a stand alone treatment rather than combined directly with derma rolling.
Green tea oil is safe and effective to use after microneedling. Green tea or Camellia sinensis oil is a light oil that is safe for oral consumption and does not cause acne. It is a natural moisturiser and has mild photo protective properties that are beneficial directly after microneedling.
Green tea oil is produced from the seeds of the same plants that produce the black, white and green tea that we drink. In ancient writings from China it was listed as a wonderful cosmetic application that did not cause blemishes.
The oil is very high in linoleic acid which is a known preventative of acne. This is the most likely reason it does not cause blemishes unlike most other oils.
If using green tea oil after skin needling it is best to use an organic oil where possible. The green tea oil can also act as a carrier for other beneficial anti aging and adaptogenic herbs. These active ingredients can increase the cosmetic affects of the treatment.
The oil can be applied before or after skin needling. If applying the oil before hand, care must be taken to clean the dermaroller thoroughly afterwards. If applying the oil after treatment then gloves must be worn for good infection control in clinical situations.

Your skin may immediately feel tighter as collagen induction begins within 48 hours of treatment. The results will become more obvious 4 - 6 weeks later and continue to improve for 3 - 12 months. New collagen created should last between 5 - 7 years.
The results will depend on what you are treating. For wrinkles, scars and stretch marks the new layer of collagen will create new smoother skin in the area. This is because like scars and stretch marks wrinkles involve the collagen fibres in the area becoming misaligned and running parallel to each other.
When micro needling initiates the wound healing cascade it starts to create a new layer of smooth collagen. In this layer the collagen fibres are aligned perpendicular to each other in a web like structure. This is the way young healthy skin should look.
In the image below you can see an example of the how the fibres in two common forms of scarring have aligned in a parallel way. This is compared to the more web link structure seen in healthy skin.
When assisting hair loss most scientific studies have tended to focus on a 12 week period and results such as increased hair follicle growth are often seen after the first 4 weeks.
To achieve more dramatic results when assisting androgenic alopecia, alopecia areata or androgenetic alopecia it is recommended that treatment be ongoing. Studies have found that micro needling can increase the absorption of common hair loss drugs such as minoxidil or natural remedies such as saw palmetto.

Derma Rollers are a form of micro needling. After a derma roller treatment collagen induction begins within 48 hours. Over the next 3 - 12 months the epidermis creates a new smooth collagen matrix. This new collagen lasts for between 5 and 7 years.
This depends on the length of microneedles used. When using 0.5mm needles the skin will usually appear red and inflamed after treatment but should return to normal within 24 hours. Treatment with a 1.5mm derma roller can lead to recovery times of 2-3 days.
It is often advisable to minimise sun exposure for up to 2 weeks after a treatment session as the skin may remain photosensitive for this period of time.
The use of some cosmetic ingredients on the skin such as vitamin A can increase inflammation and dryness of the skin after treatment. This may elongate recovery times.
The image below shows skin immediately after skin needling with a 0.5mm roller. By the following day the skin had completely returned to normal.
Microneedling should be performed no more than once a fortnight when assisting wrinkles, scars and stretch marks. More often than this and the skin does not have time to effectively heal. When assisting hair loss, research recommends micro needling sessions once a week. Microneedling should never be performed daily.
When using a 0.5mm derma roller it is recommended to have 6 sessions over 12 weeks. Then take a break to allow the new collagen layer to completely form. The 6 sessions can be repeated 3 - 6 months later.
When using a 1.5mm dermaroller or longer it is often better to space treatments 4 - 6 weeks apart to allow for the longer recovery times. 1.5mm derma rollers are better used in a clinical environment than for home use.
When assisting hair loss it is usually better to use a 1.0mm dermastamp than a dermaroller. The derma stamp does get hair tangled in the axel which can be torn out. The 1.0mm length is ideal as remaining hair in the area can often provide a cushioning affect so slightly longer microneedles are required.
Skin needling is now another term for microneedling. Skin needling should be performed once every 2 weeks when using a 0.5mm derma roller or smaller. If using a 1.5mm dermaroller or longer then up to 4 - 6 weeks should be left between treatments.
When derma rolling at home it is usually best to use a 0.5mm derma roller. The smaller 0.5mm microneedles can be used once every 2 weeks. It is not recommended to use a 1.5mm dermaroller or longer at home as they can create bleeding.
Correct needle length or needle size is vital for safety and sterility when microneedling at home.
To assist wrinkles the face should be microneedled once every 2 weeks using a 0.5mm derma roller. When assisting scars especially acne scars then it is better to use a 1.0mm dermaroller or dermastamp once every 2 weeks.
The face is a more delicate sensitive area than the thighs or stomach. For this reason it is better not to use any microneedles longer than 1.0mm on the face at home. Longer needles should only be used in a clinical environment with effective infection control.
Derma rollers can be used on the scalp once a week if there is very little hair remaining. If there is still hair in the area then it is better to use a 1.0mm dermastamp on the area once a week. This avoids hair becoming tangled in the axel of the derma roller and being torn out.
Yes if you are using a 0.3mm derma roller or shorter. This is done solely to increase absorption of products through the skin. Generally it is not advised as the skin does not have adequate time to heal. 0.5mm derma rollers or longer should never be used daily.
Using any size of dermaroller daily can lead to very dry skin. Puncturing the outer layer of the epidermis leads to Trans epidermal water loss (TEWL). In other a small amount of the skins fluids escape each time you derma roll.
For this reason treatments are better done every 2 weeks.
A 0.5mm derma roller is best used once every 2 weeks. This allows adequate time for the wound healing cascade to occur, naturally inducting collagen. Using a 0.5 mm dermaroller more often than this does not allow enough for the skin to repair itself.
When using a 0.5mm derma roller it is best to have 6 sessions over 12 weeks. This means allowing 2 weeks between each treatment. If you are having skin needling with 1.5mm dermarollers or longer in a clinic then it is usually better to have 3 sessions 4-6 weeks apart.
In this way how many skin needling treatments you have is determined largely by the microneedles length. Longer needles have longer recovery times and are spaced further apart. You normally have less of these more invasive treatments.
Using a dermaroller on your face at home should take less than 5 minutes. Rolling across an area of skin 15 times creates on average 250 micro punctures / cm. Research has suggested that any more than this is unnecessary to achieve results in collagen induction or increased product absorption.
No cosmetic treatment is permanent as the process of aging is ongoing. On average the new collagen created by micro needling will last 5 - 7 years. A series of micro needling sessions can be repeated several times a year to create more long lasting results.
It is best to leave 2 weeks between microneedling sessions. This allows ample time for the skin to recover from a treatment with a 0.5mm dermaroller. Some clinics will allow 4 - 6 weeks between treatments when longer more invasive procedures are used.
Most microneedling treatments are performed as part of a cosmetic process called collagen induction therapy. This is separate from the limited use of microneedling for transdermal drug delivery and vaccination.
Generally the microneedles are formed from stainless steel. These can be formed individually or as part of a disk. A recent innovation is the introduction of hypoallergenic Biopolymer microneedles. This avoids nickel allergy and as the Bioploymer needles are created in one mould they can never fall out.

If hand washing a silk pillowcase use a gentle touch with no twisting or wringing of the material. Silk is strong when dry but weaker and more vulnerable when wet. This is the best way to wash silk pillowcases.
Washing Silk Pillowcase also depends a lot on the quality of the pillowcase. A high quality 100% mulberry silk pillowcase of 19 momme should allow you to wash the pillowcase regularly without issue.
Be aware lower quality silk pillowcases may deteriorate rapidly under these conditions and it is a good idea to trust the silk pillowcase seller as it is often hard for the untrained eye to determine the thickness and quality of silk.
Below we provide full washing instructions for silk pillowcases.
In normal situations it is best to wash your silk pillowcase weekly with your other bed linen. If you are suffering from acne or use a lot of products on your skin before bed then washing more regularly can be advisable.
Where possible it is best to have several silk pillowcases to ease the load on washing. As genuine quality silk cases can be expensive this is not always possible so you may need to time your laundry days to ensure your pillowcase is always clean and dry.
The best laundry detergent for silk pillowcases are gentle detergents like a wool wash to protect the fibres. Tough detergents will leave the silk tough and scratchy defeating the purpose of purchasing a silk pillowcase. If you have bought your silk pillowcase especially to assist with dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis then you should also ensure you use a hypoallergenic washing liquid.
When using a washing machine use your normal does of detergent per load. If washing in a sink then use roughly one teaspoon per basin.
We dont only buy silk pillowcases for their wonderful health and anti aging benefits. They are add an eloquence to any bed room. Stains caused by face creams, oils or simply sweat can ruin this appearance.
To remove stains it is best to work a tiny amount of detergent into the stain with your fingers. Allow the detergent to do its work for about 15 minutes before proceeding to wash the case.
It is important to avoid using stain removers that may contain bleach. Bleach can be harmful to silk fibres and may cause yellowing and breakage of the fibres. Chlorine bleach in particular can actually dissolve silk fibres completely.
Gentle is the key when learning how to get stains out of silk pillowcase.
No the heat will damage the delicate silk fibres. In an absolute emergency you can use the airing setting for about 15 minutes but you will be shortening the life of your silk pillowcase.
It is best to air dry your clean silk pillowcase. In most situations this will not take long and is much better for the silk fibres.
This depends completely on the quality of the silk pillowcase you purchase. The best silk pillowcase Australia examples will usually last at least 2 years with constant use and careful washing. Some will last much longer.
The quality of the silk cannot be emphasised enough. For most people it is very hard to judge the quality of silk. Moreover it is very common for silk pillowcases of 12 or 14 momme to be passed off as 19 momme. The cost of producing these inferior silk pillowcases is of course much lower so more profitable for manufacturers but they will usually fall apart in a matter of months rather than years.
This is a matter of personal preference and how much you trust the seller. In most cases much like other intimate items it is best to err on the side of caution and gently wash the case before use.
No is the answer to the question do silk pillowcases cause acne. if kept clean and well washed silk pillowcases will actually be better for acne prone skin than cotton pillowcases or satin pillowcases. The is because silk proteins are naturally anti bacterial. Less bacteria touching your face can only benefit acne outbreaks.
Silk pillowcases require an little extra care than cotton pillowcases so why go to this extra effort?
The key benefits of a silk pillowcase include -

What to apply after microneedling? It is best to apply a small amount of green tea oil twice a day to protect your skin. The oil can be mixed with a little water to allow it to better spread across the skin. Microneedling opens tiny holes in the skin which allow the bodies natural fluids to leak out and leaves the skin feeling slightly dry. This is commonly known as Trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL).
Green tea oil naturally moisturises the skin to alleviate this dryness in a way water based moisturisers cannot. The green tea oil also contains microneedling aftercare vitamin C to assist healing in a natural way.
As it further drys out the skin we do not recommend hyaluronic acid serum after microneedling. The microneedles create tiny channels in the skin which allow some of the body natural moisturising fluids to leak out. This can leave the skin feeling very dry for several days afterwards. Any form of hyaluronic acid will increase this feeling.
[blogquiz]
We are often asked when can I exercise after microneedling? This depends on the type of exercise. Doing exercise that involves a lot of sweating like going to the gym after microneedling can increase the risk of the treated skin becoming infected. This often looks like a little red rash.
How long you should avoid the gym after microneedling depends on how intense the microneedling was. If using a 0.5mm dermaroller then 2 days is usually plenty. However if a more invasive technique has been used and derma rollers of 1.5mm or longer have been used then you may need to wait up to a week.
Swimming after microneedling procedures should also be avoided for a couple of days in most cases as salt water may sting and chlorinated pools are not always as clean as they should be. This can increase the risk of skin infections, which can feel like an itchy rash after microneedling. This is rare especially with smaller 0.5mm microneedle rollers but it is still best avoided.
If in doubt wait at least 3 days after microneedling before resuming normal activities and longer than 72 hours if using microneedles longer than 0.5mm. This should avoid any microneedling side effects like skin rashes.
Yes and it is recommended post treatment. After microneedling the tiny punctures will have allowed a small amount of the skins natural moisture to leak onto the face. This can make the skin feel more dry and sticky. It is best rinsed off in a luke warm shower with a gentle cleanser a couple of hours after micro needling. If using longer needles 1.5mm or longer then there is the potential for blood on the skin which will also need to be rinsed off. Longer microneedles like this are not recommended.
Showers are preferable to baths after skin needling treatments as they create a lower risk of infection. Baths can be unhygienic especially around the plug holes and this bacteria can increase the risk of skin infections
Microneedling can create photosensitivity after treatment. This sensitivity to sunlight can last for up to a week and longer if using very long microneedles. For this reason it is best to avoid the sun and to not plan treatments in the middle of beach holidays or other sun soaked activities.
If at all possible it is best to avoid the use of sunscreen for the first 24 hours after microneedling. However if you do need to go in the direct sun during this period then the best sunscreen after microneedling is usually the zinc based sun creams that stay on the surface of the skin and block the suns rays rather than those that absorb deeply into the healing skin.
There is no set time limit which you must wait for before drinking alcohol after microneedling but it is usually best to wait a day or two before drinking. Remember that alcohol is a vasodilator and so if your skin is already more red than usual then the alcohol will make this worse. In the rare case that you experience any dizziness after a microneedling treatment do not drink alcohol and contact your health professional.
It is best to avoid a chemical peel after microneedling. Microneedling initiates the bodies natural wound healing cascade and this is how it creates collagen induction. Chemical peels like microdermabrasion also use this process to create collagen production but in a much more invasive way. This wound healing process should not be overused. It is best to do one treatment at a time and wait to experience the results before moving onto the next treatment. This way you also know which treatment works and is therefore worth spending your money on.
If you are wondering how soon after microneedling can I dermaplane? The answer is the same. Wait until the skin has finished healing after microneedling before commencing the next treatment.
Where possible it is best to avoid applying make up for 24 hours after microneedling. Many forms of makeup can block the pores and increase the risk of skin infections. If absolutely necessary then apply the minimum amount possible for the first week after treatment to allow unhindered skin rejuvenation.
Microneedling aftercare needs to be planned out in advance so it can be accommodated into your lifestyle. When planning a series of microneedling treatments, in the weeks prior, consider what activities you will be doing at the time and how best to look after your skin after treatment without limiting your enjoyment.

There are two terms we need to consider here. Do you want to sterilise your dermaroller or do you want to disinfect your derma roller. Believe it or not they are very different things. If you sterilise your dermaroller it means another person can use it as you have removed the risk of blood born infections. This is virtually impossible with derma rollers as the machines used to sterilise also destroy the derma rollers.
So when we say clean a dermaroller what we are actually referring to is disinfecting a dermaroller. This kills bacteria to remove the risk of skin infections. It does not remove the risk of blood born diseases so derma rollers should never be shared with another person. They can be reused on one person only. Next we will learn more about how to clean micro derma roller.
[blogquiz]Sanitise is another word for disinfect but with a wider meaning closer to make clean and hygienic.
The process to create a clean dermaroller is a follows -
So what do you clean a dermaroller with? Below we discuss the 2 best options on the market. Both can be used in beauty clinics or if microneedling at home.
Colloidal Silver spray - This is perhaps the best derma roller sanitizer on the market. It kills 99.99% of bacteria. Unlike alcohol it will not dehydrate the skin so is our preferred option. Make sure any spray you buy is from a reputable seller and contains at least 25 parts per million of silver ions.
Isopropyl Alcohol Sanitiser Spray - This is the traditional way to disinfect cosmetic equipment and can work well as a roller cleaner. Again the alcohol kills 99.99% of bacteria. Unlike the silver, alcohol can dehydrate the skin which can work against your overall skin care routine. Make sure the alcohol has had plenty of time to evaporate before applying the roller to the skin.
This is not recommended for two reasons. The active ingredient in dettol is chloroxylenol. The is a form of alcohol but not one that is recommended for the skin. The Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database ranks chloroxylenol as a mid-range toxic chemical that can cause burning, itching, rash, redness, or swelling. It should not be applied to a cosmetic device that is intended to be placed on this skin and certainly not to a device that penetrates the skin however shallowly.
The second reason dettol should not be used to clean your dermaroller is it is unknown how dettol will react with the glue in many micro-needle rollers. Many metal micro-needles are attached to the roller head with glue. Some products including denture cleaners have been known to dissolve this glue causing the needles to fall out. This is a safety risk as well as destroying the dermaroller.
This is one of the reasons that White Lotus recommends its hypoallergenic biopolymer microneedle roller. The micro needles are formed in a single sheet so can never become detached.
Dermarollers can be used to assist stretch marks, cellulite, wrinkles, scars and hair restoration. As they contain microneedles it is vital to ensure that you clean and look after the roller properly. This avoids any risk of skin infection and ensures better results.

When it comes to genuine Crystal Rollers, the Crystal Roller from White Lotus is the real deal: natural and authentic. This means they are chemical-free, imitation-free and created with only A-grade certified raw crystals, ensuring an original ‘crystal effect’ of healing and energy.
On the other hand, the non-genuine versions are not natural, receive chemical treatment and are inferior, reconstituted versions that are totally inauthentic.
The White Lotus’ distinctive shape and one-off design includes solid brass with a smooth finish that ensures your skin is not cut or damaged in any way. The roller can be dismantled so that you can keep it hygienically clean.
Fake Crystal rollers do not use solid metals, instead often using sub-standard wire, that can lead to the roller falling apart and potentially causing injury to the face. Most are manufactured within the same handful of generic factories in China and even though they are made for different sellers across the globe, they are all the same product saturating the market.
White Lotus Crystal Rollers are presented in a signature silk-lined box. This is correct way to package authentic crystals, as real silk keeps the properties of the crystal intact. The box is made from FSC sustainable material and the EVA foam (considered the least harmful synthetic material) holds the roller in place. Additionally, the obvious thought and quality of the packaging makes it an extra-special gift
The non-genuine rollers will come poorly presented in a bog-standard box. This makes damage during transit a risk and doesn’t lend itself to the full experience of receiving a good-quality product.
Crystal Roller Warranty Promise:
White Lotus stands behind its authenticity. Their products are backed with a certified warranty assuring that the product will perform for a lifetime. Their dedicated lifetime guarantee is affirmed here.
It comes with no surprise that the non-genuine versions bear zero warranty - mainly due to the sub-standard manufacturing process and therefore no guarantee is given.
Genuine products generally come with a good track record. The Company White Lotus was founded by Dry Needling professionals from Australia who trained in China.
Their discovery of crystals and the holistic benefits led them to pursue extensive training in these practices that continued throughout the years. Today they share their expertise and knowledge with their customers.
Resources like tuition and support to achieve better results is part and parcel of their service.
For example - this video on how to use their Roller with this step-by-step demonstration. Additionally, they have a large subscriber base and many followers, which you can join via their website or social media.
Sellers of mass-produced Crystal Rollers offer little or no support. Product knowledge is extremely limited and there is no personal customer service. Given that they are not invested in the product, the post-sale experience is usually non-existent.
White Lotus’ Crystal range is uniquely created according to traditional Chinese medicine and ancient practices. They consider the properties of different Crystal types on different skin types as detailed here. With individuality in mind, they have created the Crystal Facial options by Skin Type; by Acupuncture Meridian and by Chakra. Your journey of discovery starts here.
Common sellers of fake Crystal Rollers buy the product that is readily available and not unique. They are almost always substandard and limited in choice, making them impersonal and disappointing, with almost no wow factor and absolutely no beneficial qualities.

The use of different types of crystals is a great way to help target different skin problems of your client. Crystal rollers and gua sha can be made in five main crystal types for skincare.
Start with a consultation of what results your client is after and examine their skin type. Then offer your range of crystals and explain the properties of each, by engaging with the client you can discuss the which types of crystals would be best used for their facial and customize a treatment based on their wants. This is a great opportunity to understand what they want. The ability to deliver great service will only enhance their overall experience and encourage them to come back again.
Here is a list outlining the different crystals, their benefits and the skin type that they are best suited for:
The crystal roller and gua sha have different benefits for the skin and different techniques can be applied with each tool. But there are important steps to take when giving a crystal facial:
Firstly, on clean skin, prime and hydrate the skin with a few pumps of serum and gently massage in an upwards and outwards motion
Using a crystal roller:
Always roll in an upwards motion and use long and gentle strokes. Make sure to not pull at the skin or to use too much pressure. By the time you have completed the facial massage with the crystal roller, the serum would have completely absorbed into the skin, leaving it feeling plump and moisturized.
Using a gua sha:
Apply a facial oil to help the gua sha glide across the skin without creating tension. This is important as the gua sha tool uses more pressure and we would want to avoid any unnecessary tugging at the skin that will cause discomfort. Some of the oil will be absorbed in the process, leaving a dewy finish.
The gua sha tool has different sides and edges that are used on different parts of the face and neck. It will be applied in a similar motion as the crystal roller, moving in upwards strokes. Because of the shape of the gua sha, it can be used to target specific areas of the face to massage.
After the use of each tool, please make sure to sanitize them properly. Colloidal silver or isopropyl alcohol are recommended cleaning agents, the use of UV sanitizer would also be encouraged. These tools are best stored in silk boxes that will help protect the crystals.
Here is a detailed step by step instruction guide of how to perform a crystal facial, it illustrates the use of both crystal roller and gua sha.
As great as they are on their own, it has been seen that crystal facials have amazing advantages when used in conjunction with other more aggressive beauty treatments. For example treatments like dermarolling, micro-needling and micro dermal abrasion are all invasive treatments that each have different beneficial properties. When you use crystal facials before these treatments, together they can achieve better results and here is why:

1. Be sure to thoroughly cleanse your skin.
2. Use between 4 and 5 pumps of the crystal serum, pumping it onto your hands.
3. It’s important that you gently massage the crystal serum into the skin using the direction of upwards and outwards.
4. After your skin has been evenly covered with the serum, you can now use the jade roller to massage the serum deeper into your skin.
5. Begin by using the roller on the right side of your face, then move onto the left-side repeating the same motion.
6. Using long, smooth strokes, you should start on your throat and then roll gently upwards from your neck and chin, doing this for about 5-10 times.
7. From your chin line, begin to roll out along your jawline.
8. Slowly start moving upwards, ensuring that you roll your entire cheek in an outwards motion.
9. Starting from the edge of your nose, gently roll laterally underneath your eyes.
10. After this, start rolling upwards across your cheek.
11. Starting from the lateral corner of your eyes, roll the crystal roller across crow’s feet.
12. Starting from the center of your forehead, begin to roll the roller outwards in a lateral motion.
13. Starting at the tip of your nose, begin rolling upwards to your hairline.
14. Continue this upwards rolling motion across your entire forehead.
15. After you have completed all of this rolling, the crystal serum you had on your skin will be completely absorbed so it isn’t necessary to cleanse your face before moving on.
16. You can now apply the green tea facial oil on your skin.
17. Use about a ½ dropper and place it directly on your hands.
18. Start by rubbing your hands together, then you can massage the green tea oil into your skin using an upwards and outwards motion.
19. This oil was specifically designed to be absorbed at a slower rate, so a small amount remains to allow the gua sha to smoothly glide across your skin.
20. It’s important to always start on the right side of your face since this is how energy is believed to flow in ancient traditions.
21. Begin by using the point of the gua sha to stroke up your face, flowing in straight lines starting from up your chin and moving outwards over your cheeks.
22. Next, start stroking upwards and outwards over this area again, this time using a zig-zag motion rather than straight lines.
23. Begin using the side of the gua sha known as the “fish tail” to stroke up your jawline, ensuring that it softly cradles your jawline as you move it.
24. Take the long, curved side of the gua sha comb to gently stroke from the side of the nose to below the eyes, moving across and outwards.
25. Again, take the long, curved side of the comb to gently stroke the temples using an outwards and upwards motion across your temples.
26. Continue using the long, curved side of the comb to stroke from the center of the forehead outwards. Start gradually repeating this process as you move up your forehead.
27. Repeat this same exact process on the left side of your face.
28. If you have problem wrinkles, it can be a good idea to target them by stretching out your skin on either side of the wrinkle, then start massaging along your wrinkle in a zig-zag motion with the gua sha’s pointy end. The purpose of this is to offer stronger circulation to the wrinkle’s base.
29. In order to finish your massage, put the gua sha’s pointy end in the ear’s depression. Begin gently stroking up and around your ear, then back down your neck. This was the process traditionally used for draining any toxins that may have accumulated in your skin during the massage.

Pure Beauty Global Awards are widely regarded by industry insiders to be among the most prestigious beauty awards in Europe. Over 600 entries were in the running for this award, and we are so pleased that we made the finals over these other entries.
What makes this award different from other similar awards is that this award is judged solely and independently by industry experts. The judges are carefully selected from all aspects of the beauty industry, specifically for the unique perspective and knowledge that they offer the judging panel.
These awards are great because they allow smaller independent brands like White Lotus a fighting chance against the big names in the industry, since it’s based on industry experts rather than social media votes.
The products are judged solely on the quality of the ingredients used to make them, not the massive social media campaigns and promotions that only big budgets can afford. This makes it an ideal choice for White Lotus, since we pride ourselves in putting the quality of the product first and we are very much looking forward to the judge’s decisions.
In May, there was to be a star-studded event that takes place in Amsterdam, where the winners of each award will be announced. The theme for the event this year was “Explosion of Color”. The event has been cancelled due to coronavirus but the judging will still be taking place.
If you are not already familiar with this serum, you can learn more about it by visiting the product page directly. This is an essential part of the White Lotus crystal facial. What’s even better about this product is that it can be customized specifically for you by skin type, chakra analysis, or acupuncture meridian.
This serum was created using real crystals, rather than the trendier but less effective approach of crystal infusion. The serum actually contains real ground jade and tourmaline crystals, which is combined with other natural adaptogenic herbs.
Real crystals that have been applied to the skin offer many benefits, including:
You should also know that that the Activated Jade and Tourmaline Crystal Face Serum is made with 90% certified organic ingredients as well as is PETA certified Vegan and cruelty-free.

Colours are used to catch our attention and to make cosmetic products look more appealing, and the more appealing they look, the more they sell. Unfortunately, companies have developed this as a marketing strategy often to the detriment of the quality of the ingredients. People are more tempted to buy a golden eye serum or a cleanser with a green “natural” look and disregard the fact that artificial colours have a harmful impact on the skin.
Artificial Colours or dyes are synthetic additives mixed together to obtain a single colour. When trying to create an artificial colour, they use up to 25 synthetic additives, and some colours requires even more. Dyes are used to give colour to various cosmetic beauty such as face creams, lotions, shampoos. Their colour is usually obtained by mixing numerous synthetic chemicals, and not all of them are mentioned on the label.
You can find dozens of chemicals in a single dye, making it extremely difficult to know exactly what you’re exposing your body to.
Much research has been performed that show different possible reactions to the articifial colours, mostly depending on the types of the dyes used, and their chemical composition. Some when they are absorbed on our skin, they can lead to irritation, sensitivity, blocked pores, which can stimulate the apparition of acne.
Some dyes are even more harmful than this because they are made from coal tar or contain heavy metal salts which can be carcinogenic. Other colours are banned in some countries but not others, such as yellow#6 which is banned in Norway and Sweden because it is known to provoke allergies, asthma, eczema or even chromosomal damage in DNA.
The list can continue with Red 3 which was also banned, but by the FDA in 1983 when a report showed that R3 had caused thyroid tumours. The risk we expose our body when using cosmetics with artificial colours is undeniable, unpredictable and very dangerous. Therefore, people should avoid using cosmetics with dyes as much as possible.
On the market, new synthetic dyes appear frequently, and they are regulated by each individual country or by one certified group like in the EU. The regulations on colour may be different from a region to another. For example, one synthetic dye may be banned from use in the EU, but in the U.S.A is perfectly fine. Therefore, you should be careful when traveling and buying products from different regions that use dyes you haven’t been exposed to before.
This very much depends on the region you live in. The detailed lists of which synthetic colours are allowed in your country can be found on the official website of the authority that regulates this issue, such as FDA in the U.S.A.
Some colours are already known for their controversial use in skincare, products such as Yellow #6, Red #40, Green #3 which are best avoided. Unfortunately, they are so many out there, and you should avoid any unknown chemicals. Try to do a quick research on google when in doubt, or try choosing products that use natural alternatives.
There are some beauty brands on the market which are using colours derived from fruits or other natural alternatives including the following
Carotenoids (E160, E161, E164), chlorophyllin (E140, E141), anthocyanins (E163), and betanin (E162) comprise four main categories of plant pigments used to colour food products. Other colourants or specialized derivatives of these core groups include: Annatto (E160b), a reddish-orange dye made from the seed of the achiote Carmine (E120), a red dye derived from the cochineal insect, Dactylopius coccus, Elderberry juice (E163), Lycopene (E160d), Paprika (E160c), Turmeric (E100)
Be aware that natural colours will never look as bright and powerful as the artificial ones.
The cosmetic and skincare products that use artificial colours will only look better in the box, but not on your skin, as they are linked to many skin problems. You can always find an alternative to look beautiful and be healthy at the same time.

In China Dushan Jade (a form of nephrite jade) has been mined since 6,000 BC. The famous Jade rollers and Gua Sha have always been made from nephrite jade, mainly for practical reasons because the Jadeite was not available until more recently. Moreover, Jadeite is much harder than nephrite, so it is more difficult to carve and more prone to shattering. It is also much more expensive. Therefore it is generally reserved for beautiful pieces of jewellery.
Brands and merchants will continue to argue about the difference between them, which one is more valuable and real, but as we demonstrated above, both of them are genuine and have been around since the word was first invented.
Times change and people are more and more inventive, always finding new ways on how to make money out of gems. A friend of mine works in the jade industry in China, and he recently told me a story about this. Apparently, in some parts of China, you can bet on your ability to identify a piece of genuine Jadeite and gamble on it. Some people have lost incredible amounts playing this game. I like this story because it shows that even though times have changed, at some level these debates still rage.
Think you could gamble on your ability to identify jade? Try guessing which stone is featured in the image attached to this blog?

Fortunately, jade rollers are generally a safe product to use as well as a simple product to use properly. These short videos on how to use the rollers pose little threat to the unsuspecting viewers as they demonstrate how to use the jade roller. The problem with these videos is that they mention about how to roll the jade roller downwards, particularly in the neck area. The jade roller is one of many tools that have been used in ancient China for thousands of years for cosmetic purposes. Other techniques include Gua Sha and cupping.
By learning about ancient Chinese health and beauty treatments, you will find that these are both more closely aligned in the past than they are in our modern times. Their philosophy on these matters led to a basic understanding of how beauty treatments, particularly beauty massages, should always lift and open up the energy of one’s face. What this means is that when you are rolling and massaging your skin, you should be doing it outwards to lift the sagging skin and stretch any of your loose skin outwards.
This process moves any excess fluids and causing puffiness and swelling upwards and out towards the side of your face. Techniques like Crystal Gua Sha are typically used for draining the fluid out by using the lymphatic system. It can also help to lift any sagging skin, something a lot of people are looking for. The principle of these techniques applies to the use of crystal rollers, Gua Sha and crystal combs. These are items that are all used in an upwards and outwards manner towards the trunk. Body combing is performed in the same manner.
Properly using this technique because especially important as you use it on your limbs, since using hard pressure downwards with a Crystal Gua Sha can lead to unfortunate results. This can work against the necessary venous drainage, leading to a pooling of blood in your hands or feet. As you start using these products, if you see a video that uses these items in a downwards motion, you should skip it and find another instructional video. In order to get the most out of these practices, it is so important that you complete them as traditional Chinese medicine dictates. There is a reason why these techniques have been used for both health and beauty purposes for thousands of years. If you aren’t doing it properly, you are not benefiting from the true effectiveness that jade rolling has to offer.

Which Crystal Roller is Best for Your Skin
As these needles pass through the skin, the needles can naturally activate the body’s wound healing response. Think about when you get a cut or scrape. The body will naturally start the healing process, shedding this damaged skin and allowing for a smooth healing process. The new layer of skin (collagen) can only form if this damaged skin is removed. This process occurs as a result of collagenase being released. Collagenase is a group of enzymes that are responsible for collagen. These enzymes will then break down all of the damaged collagen around the wound, which allows the skin to repair itself correctly. It’s a natural process that your body already goes through.
When it comes to less severe cases of skin penetration, such as what happens during the process of skin needling, these enzymes are still present though in smaller quantities. Healthy skin features collagen fibers that are organized in a web-like formation, where the fibers run perpendicular of each other. In skin conditions like stretch marks and scar tissue, the fibers change their direction and end up parallel to each other. This change is what causes skin to have that scarred appearance. Skin needling uses your body’s own natural processes to achieve the desired effects, without you having to take medications or go through expensive and invasive treatments.
When you use skin needling techniques, you are not just developing a new, smooth layer of this collagen but you are also breaking down any misaligned collagen fibers that cause scar tissue and stretch marks. This means that by using a dermaroller, you can actually increase the new collagen production by up to 1000% as well as removing the unattractive skin cells. These are all important things that will help you retain a youthful appearance and remove any imperfections that you may have felt self-conscious about. This may have been a long held secret in traditional medicine, but now you know why this is such a highly effective approach to improving your skin care.
You could go the route of modern medicine, but these can be expensive approaches that can also cause some level of pain and discomfort. Ancient approaches like skin needling can give you the results you need by simply activating the body’s natural healing process. If this is a process that you would love to learn more about, click these links below. Many people will have seen the stories in the new recently of the devastating impact of gemstone mining in Madagascar and other third world nations. Unchecked this type of mining will often employ slave or child labour.
Workers rarely receive a guaranteed wage. They are usually only reimbursed for gems delivered. This creates a precarious existence often haunted by poverty. It is strange to think that many crystal that are mined this way are bought in the West to bring positive energy to the holder.
Jade rollers are traditionally made from nephrite jade as opposed to jadeite. Nephrite is commonly found in Russia, China and Guatemala amongst others. White Lotus's ethically sourced jade is from China and it is this sourcing we will focus on here.
In China Jade face rollers have been a statement of luxury for hundreds of years. Jade has always held a special place in the culture and has often been more expensive than gold. In fact mutton fat jade a particular type of nephrite still is!
Nephrite jade stone has always been mined in China. There are four famous district that mine jade. The oldest jade mining site in China is dated around 3200 BC.
This is of course very interesting but how does it impact the ethical nature of the jade? Due to its value both financially and culturally jade mining is heavily regulated. It is observed by higher levels of government as an important cultural vestige. It is extremely difficult for mine owners to take liberties with the health and well being of their employees. Penalties are severe for those who do so.
The mines involved have also been in continuous operation for hundreds if not thousands of years. It is rare to sink a new mine and this greatly reduces new environmental damage. This is in contrast to many of the modern mining practices around the world.
No mining is perfect and all mining has an environmental cost but the mining of nephrite jade in China takes a far lower toll than most of its competitors.
Below you can view a video of one of the key nephrite mines in China.
Once the crystal has been mined the next step is carving the jade into the correct shapes. Jade has traditionally been hand carved and for brands like White Lotus this traditional continues today.
Nephrite jade is not a hard stone. It rates between 6-7 on the Mohs scale which is much softer than quartz or amethyst. Despite this, a certain amount of skill is still required to accurately carve the jade head and jade handle. This has traditionally been a well respected skill in China.
This process however has been somewhat interrupted by the introduction of chemical treatment to the carving process. Crystals are treated with chemicals, usually acids, for two reasons. The first is that it enhances the colour on otherwise dull crystals. This can help make a cheap low grade crystal look like more expensive gems.
The second reason is that some chemicals can soften the crystal making carving easier. In the process of carving, crystals can often crack. This results in wasted crystal and losses for the manufacturer. To avoid these losses it has become increasingly common to first chemically treat the crystals. This reduces breakages and saves money. The softer crystal can also be carved by less skilled hands and so lower wages can be paid.
There are several issues with chemically treating crystals. The first as mentioned above is the lowering of skills and wages for the carvers. The second is that they are altering the chemical structure of the crystal.
In the West customers are buying the jade rollers because they believe they are made from real crystal. Would they be as popular if customers knew that most were carved from chemically altered crystal? Is this process really ethical? At White Lotus we do not believe so. None of our crystal rollers or jade Gua sha are ever chemically treated.
No matter how carefully we monitor the mining process all mining takes an environmental toll. Not only crystal mining but the mining of metals in our phones, cars and everything else we take for granted.
Crystals are also a limited resource. They have been produced by tremendous geological pressures over millions of years. The supply is finite and should be respected.
Creating cheap poor quality jade rollers that break in a matter of weeks and are thrown away completely disrespects this rarity.
Poor quality thin metal brackets are the most common problem. Most are made from wire and are simply glued together and to the jade. This makes them very weak and results in regular breakages. These breakages can be dangerous to the skin as the wire underneath is often sharp.
By using thicker metal brackets and fitting them correctly to the jade most of these breakages can be avoided and you can continue enjoying the benefits of jade rolling for years.
To be sure we are honouring this process White Lotus offers a lifetime guarantee on all its crystal products. This ensures we only produce the highest quality jade rollers and the hard won crystals can continue to benefit our customers for the rest of their lives.

]]>When you are pregnant, your first concern is that whatever you are doing is safe for your pregnancy. One of these concerns is whether or not you can use any type of skin needling technique while you are pregnant. Some women want to continue using skin needling for its anti-aging benefits, or some other skin condition. However while a woman is pregnant, she is often concerned with using needling to prevent and treat those inevitable stretch marks.
Stretch marks are very common over the course of one’s pregnancy, as your stomach expands to accommodate the growing child. The stomach may be the primary area of concern for pregnant women, but there are other areas of concern including the thighs and breasts. Stretch marks on the breasts are also a concern after having your child, especially if you are nursing.
One of the first things that you should know is that dry needling is perfectly fine during any stage of your pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Dry needling refers to the process of using a dermaroller without using any other products applied to the skin, including lotions and creams.
Why can’t you use the White Lotus creams and lotions when using this treatment? The answer really lies in the fact that there hasn’t been enough testing to be sure that this is safe for your unborn child. As a result, we find that it is best to err on the side of caution.
Other websites may claim that their products are 100% safe, but the fact is no one knows if this is true. No company in the world has conducted the large scientific random controlled trial required in order to say their cellulite cream or other skin care product is safe for pregnant women to use with micro needling.
After you have given birth and finished breastfeeding, you can begin use the serums and other products to reduce the appearance of these scars and stretch marks. White Lotus has products that are specifically made for stretch marks, especially the White Lotus Stretch Mark Pack.
This is a highly effective treatment that can reduce the occurrence of any stretch marks as they appear. In fact, by treating your stretch marks while they are still red you will notice quicker results. This can also be a great way to help your skin recover more quickly after you have given birth, allowing it to tighten faster.
Most of these stretch marks will be found on your abdomen and thighs. These tend to be thicker, which means that you should use a 1.0mm dermaroller for your derma roller stretch marks treatments. If you have a 0.5mm roller, you can use that but you will notice results a lot slower. For best results, you should use 6 microneedling sessions which should be done 2 weeks apart in order to get the maximum effectiveness.

What about derma rolling C-section scars? If you had a caesarean done, you will notice unwanted scars. Needling can be an effective treatment for this, but you will want to get the doctor’s approval to ensure that it is safe to do. The outer part of the skin may be healed from this, but there may be damage still underneath this. You need to be fully healed in order to use this treatment. You should also follow the instructions provided with the dermaroller on how to use a derma roller on the stomach.
As well as assisting stretch marks dermarollers can be used to help assist cellulite, which can often worsen during and after pregnancy. The dermarolling treatment helps get rid of cellulite by repairing the collagen matrix of the skin which becomes stretched when the underlying fat cells expand. Assisting healthy collagen production like this can create new smooth skin on all skin types. You can combine the clinic or home microneedling treatments with cellulite cupping during pregnancy for even better results.
Derma rollers are safe to use when pregnant. The only concern is what products you can use with dermarolling as dermarollers dramatically increase product absorption. The best and safest way to perform skin needling while pregnant is to only do dry needling which is the use of a dermaroller without any dermaroller creams or serums.

One of these potentially risky things that can be seen on these videos is to use a crystal Gua Sha on your neck. This can turn a very safe treatment that offers a lot of great benefits to the user and turn it into a risky situation. The neck is an incredibly sensitive and delicate part of your body, which houses some important parts including your carotid artery and the windpipe. When Gua Sha is traditionally practiced, this requires a lot more force than when you are just using a jade roller. The goal is for stronger simulation of the problem areas to provide therapeutic benefits to your back and cosmetic benefits for your face. Traditionally, this treatment would also include cosmetic acupuncture that is usually graded from the least invasive treatment to the most invasive treatment as a final stage. What this means is that you would start with the jade roller, then use Gua Sha, the cosmetic cupping, and finally acupuncture.
Stronger simulation on the neck can be particularly problematic if you use it on the front of your neck. First of all, stroking over the windpipe can be pretty uncomfortable for a person. Even more importantly, by applying too much pressure to the carotid artery you can cause temporary issues with the blood flow to the brain. Best case scenario, you just feel a little faint. That being said, Gua Sha should never take place on the front part of your neck.
Traditionally, Gua Sha is used on the back of the neck at the end of your treatment. Once you have completed a strong simulation on your face, you would then move the jade roller behind your ear and then down the back and side of your neck. The purpose of this is the drainage of lymphatic fluid from your face, which can reduce puffiness and finish off your treatment.
If you start watching videos that tell you to use your jade roller on the front of your neck or to move the roller downwards, these are not videos that are actually helpful to you. Fortunately, you can turn to White Lotus to offer you expert guidance and support as you try to learn more about these ancient practices for beauty purposes. If you are interested in learning more about these practices, you can check out these resources on how to make the most of your jade roller and anything you’d like to know about traditional Chinese medicines.

]]>Jadeite jades are known for their robustness and are exceptionally hard in nature. Around 70% of these stones come from Myanmar. Nephrite jades are mainly found in China and are commonly used for making Jade rollers.
Mostly found in Punjab, a famous northern region of India, False jades are the cheap imitation of these rare stones. Since the originals are hard to find and heavy on pockets to buy, fake jades came into existence. They are termed as Styrian jade, New jade, and Teton Jade.
There are many ways to find the authenticity of jade stones. False jades get degraded as they age. They don’t go well with acids either. This is why the sculptures and ornaments made up of fake jades are usually confined inside a room or a shaded place. They also lose their colour as time goes by and if they get wet.
False jades fall under a serpentine stone group which are green, and brown in colour. They also have spots. You might find the name of the group ‘serpentine’ interesting. The theory is the stone group was named after the green colour of serpents (snakes).
Another way to check a fake or false jade is by touching it. Original jades are cold in nature and disperse heat. You can put a piece of paper on one side of the stone and burn the other side with a lighter. If the paper turns yellowish, you have a fake one at your disposal. The original jade won’t let the heat pass to the paper as it will disperse it from the burning surface altogether.
Now, if they are so different, why is there confusion? The answer lies in the geological factors where they are formed. Both the genuine nephrite jades and the fake ones can be found in similar conditions. The rock formations where they naturally occur are mostly common - between serpentinite and mafic. While mining genuine nephrite jade, there are chances than you’ll find the fake ones too. The authenticity of such a jade can only be confirmed after professional inspections and lab tests.
A pro tip to avoid falling prey to fake jade suppliers: Only buy your jade products such as jade rollers and Gua Sha from an authentic jade dealer who works closely with the pure nephrite jade and jadeite jade suppliers. A simple online research and presence of mind will go a long way.
