What size Dermal Roller do I need?

The size you need depends a lot on the specific use. Below we have included a rough guide. Please contact us directly if you require further information.

0.2mm Dermal Roller - These rollers are to small to induct collagen. They will increase blood flow to the area and are often used as home use rollers. For most purposes we would recommend the 0.5mm roller in preference as it is the smallest dermal roller that inducts collagen.

0.5mm Dermal Roller - This is the smallest roller that inducts collagen. As such it is the best general purpose roller and by far the best seller. It is highly recommended for anti aging on the face and for breast enhancement. It can also be used for scarring but is best used in conjunction with the 1mm dermal stamp for this purpose as deeper stimulation is usually required.

1mm Dermal Roller - This is the most commonly used roller to assist hair loss. In most cases this is effective but if hair is much longer and thicker then a 1.5mm roller may be better. These rollers are also good for smaller scars especially on the face.

1.5mm Dermal Roller - These rollers are generally used for problems in which deeper collagen stimulation and rearrangement is required. Therefore these rollers are the most effective at assisting scars and scarring, cellulite and stretch marks or straie.

CE vs FDA Approval

Currently there are a great deal of companies claiming their dermal rollers have FDA Approval, FDA listed or FDA registeration. This sounds very impressive until you realise that this simply means they have self regulated themselves as a class 1 medical device. Basically they have filled out a form and paid a fee. At no point were their manufacturing premises inspected or did the FDA guarantee the sterility or quality of the product. The FDA derivative on the subject is listed below.

FDA 21 CFR807.39;
"Registration of a device establishment or assignment of a registration number does not in any way denote approval of the establishment or its products. Any representation that creates an impression of official approval because of registration or possession of a registration number is misleading and constitutes misbranding."

CE approval on the other hand means the manufacturing premises of the product was inspected by a notified body of the EEC and that an EEC certificate 93/42 was issued assuring buyers of both quality and importantly in the case of dermal rollers sterility. Dermal rollers that meet this criteria will carry the CE logo on their packaging along with their unique notified body number.

As you can see CE approval is the only real guarantee of quality. As a final note it is worth mentioning that if you do buy a cheap dermal roller from Asia and it carries the CE logo on its packaging it might be worth inivestigating further as not all companies operate honestly.

White Lotus currently stocks the cheapest high quality CE approved dermal rollers available in Australia.

Scientific Evidence for the Dermal Roller

1. Henry et al. demonstrated that microneedles of 150μm length resulted in a 10,000 increase in absorption of calcein by the skin after the microneedles were removed. Henry S, McAllister DV, Allen MG, Prausnitz MR. Microfabricated microneedles: a novel approach to transdermal drug delivery. J Pharm Sci. 1998 Aug;87(8):922-5
2. Kaushik et al (28) carried out a small trial to determine if microneedles are perceived as painless by human subjects. Microneedle arrays of 150μm length, were inserted into the skin of 12 subjects and compared to pressing a flat surface against the skin (negative control) and inserting a 26-gauge hypodermic needle into the skin surface (positive control). Subjects were unable to distinguish between the painless sensation of the flat surface and that caused by microneedles. Kaushik S, Hord AH, Denson DD, McAllister DV, Smitra S, Allen MG, Prausnitz MR. Lack of pain associated with microfabricatedmicroneedles. Anesth Analg. 2001 Feb;92(2):502-4.
3. Fernandes D. demonstrated that microneedling can induce up to a 1,000% increase in collagen after a single treatment. Fernandes D. Minimally invasive percutaneous collagen induction. Oral Maxillofac Surg Clin North Am 2006;17:51-63.

FAQ about the Dermal Roller

Q: Is the White Lotus genuine dermal roller TGA approved?
A: White Lotus has sought the advice of the TGA and has been informed that for all the cosmetic purposes listed on this website dermal rollers are not classified as medical devices and therefore there is no need to register them. This applies to both the 0.2mm rollers and all the longer needle rollers up to 1.5mm in length. To ensure the quality and sterility of the rollers, White Lotus's Dermal Rollers are manufactured in accordance with EU certificate 93/42 which is the standard of manufacturing accepted by the TGA for all medical devices. White Lotus is one of only 2 suppliers operating in Australia who can produce this certification. This certification allos our Dermal Rollers to carry the CE logo.

Q: What is the difference between a dermal roller and a derma roller?
A: The word dermal comes from the Latin which simply means relating to the skin. Dermal rollers and hammers have been used in China for thousands of years for both anti aging and hair restoration. More recently the term Derma roller has been trademarked by a European company. This is in fact a brand name rather than a general name for all rollers that perform skin needling.

Q: How can you guarantee the quality of the White Lotus Dermal Roller?
A: The White Lotus Genuine Dermal Roller has been manufactured to strict European Union standards. Our manufacturers hold a current EU certificate 93/42 which is a guarantee of both quality and sterility. The TGA is currently aligning its standards to that of the EU and now recognises certificate 93/42 as the standard for medical devices. The EU standards currently hold stricter compliance measures than those of the US FDA.

Q: Is there any scientific proof for the effectiveness of the Dermal Roller?
A: Please see our section on recent scientific studies. Click Here.

Q: Was the Dermal roller used in ancient China?
A: Yes the dermal roller is derived originally from the knowledge of acupuncture hence it is still often called skin needling. Originally both dermal rollers and dermal hammers were used. The dermal hammers were more similar to the new dermal stamps that are being released for scar treatments. It was only more recently that the scientific trials were conducted on the rollers that catapulted them to fame.

Q: Can the dermal roller increase the absorption of products through the skin?
A: Yes it has been shown that dermal rollers can increase transdermal absorption by up to 200 times after a single use. This is not surprising as the roller does lightly puncture the skin. This has several implications. It means that the dermal rollers can be used to increase the absorption of both anti aging products and hair restoration products. It also means that it is highly important that all products used are as safe and natural as possible. At White Lotus we only recommend using all natural products that have withstood the test of time by being tested on people for thousands of years. All White Lotus products designed to be used with the dermal roller are 100% natural in organic bases and are approved by the Vegan society. The products are designed with one simple motto 'to be effective and safe'.

Q: Do you recommend using numbing creams with the Dermal roller?
A: We strongly recommend against the use of numbing creams with the Dermal Roller. Feed back from hundreds of customers over the years has told us that in general people do not find the use of the Dermal Roller painful. This has been supported by scientific evidence as shown above. There is also some evidence that the use of numbing creams may damage local nerves. This works against the philosophy of White Lotus which has always been that the best results can be achieved by enhancing health when providing anti aging solutions.

Q: Do all Dermal Rollers induct collagen?
A: No the smallest needles that have been shown to induct collagen are the 0.5mm needles. Dermal Rollers with needles smaller than this such as 0.2mm rollers are too small to induce
collagen production.

Q: Are FDA approved rollers better than local derma l rollers?
A: No Australia does not  in fact follow FDA standards. Australia is in fact aligned with the EU approval system and is rapidly changing all our systems to meet EU standards. The new EU standards are generally considered the new global standard.
