Frequently asked questions

Is the amethyst real and where does it come from? +

Yes. Every White Lotus amethyst gua sha uses Grade A genuine amethyst crystal that has never been chemically treated, dyed or artificially enhanced. Genuine amethyst is a naturally occurring variety of quartz with colour ranging from pale lilac to deep purple caused by traces of iron in the crystal structure. White Lotus sources its amethyst to the same Grade A standard applied across its entire crystal range and backs every tool with a lifetime guarantee.

What is the correct pressure to use when doing gua sha? +

Gua sha should always be performed with light to medium pressure, never firm or aggressive pressure on the face. The tool should glide smoothly across an oiled skin surface with enough pressure to create warmth and stimulate circulation without causing discomfort or leaving marks. On the face lighter pressure than you might instinctively use is almost always correct. If the skin feels tender after use the pressure was too firm. Build confidence with the technique over several sessions before increasing pressure slightly.

Can I use the amethyst gua sha on my scalp as well as my face? +

Yes. The spine and edges of the gua sha tool can be used on the scalp in gentle stroking motions to stimulate circulation and provide a relaxing scalp massage. Part the hair in sections and use light pressure along each parting from the front hairline toward the nape of the neck. This technique is particularly popular combined with the White Lotus jade crystal comb as part of a complete scalp and hair care ritual.

How does gua sha fit into a professional treatment menu? +

Gua sha is increasingly offered as a standalone facial treatment and as a complementary add-on to facial acupuncture, massage and skincare treatments in professional clinic and spa settings. White Lotus offers a professional Jade Roller, Gua Sha and Cosmetic Cupping training course taught by qualified TCM acupuncturists for therapists who want to add these techniques to their treatment menu. The course covers both the theory and the practical protocols for face and body gua sha.

What is the best way to introduce gua sha into a daily skincare routine? +

Start with 3 to 5 minutes of gua sha after cleansing and applying facial oil in the evening, two or three times per week. Once you are comfortable with the technique and confident with the pressure you can build to daily use. Morning gua sha is particularly effective for reducing overnight puffiness. Evening gua sha suits customers who find the ritual relaxing as part of a wind-down routine. Consistency over weeks rather than intensity of any single session delivers the best cumulative results.
